Keith's Determination and Hard Work Pays Off
Keith* came to Harvey Road for a 12-week rehabilitation programme after suffering a stroke. However, with specialist support from the team and his own determination and hard work he returned home earlier than planned having made significant progress in all of his rehabilitation goals.
Harvey Road is a specialist residential acquired brain injury service in Bournemouth and the rehabilitation and support teams there worked with Keith to create a bespoke plan to maximise his rehabilitation.
When he arrived three months after having a stroke, Keith, who is in his 50s, was experiencing difficulties with communication, including moderate receptive aphasia and severe expressive aphasia and apraxia. Cognitively, he experienced significant impairments in his executive functioning cognitive abilities. Those were most significant during more complex tasks and Keith would understandably become frustrated.
Physically Keith was able to take small steps using a frame for support, and with two staff assisting. He used a functional electrical stimulation device for one of his legs and also used a self-propelled wheelchair. His difficulties meant Keith needed support from staff with all aspects of her personal care and had a fluid diet due to his risk of aspiration.
A number of rehabilitation elements and goals were built into his plan including physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy to improve his mobility, self-care and communication.
Keith and the team worked hard on these clear goals and, as a result, when he left Harvey Road to go home, he had made significant progress and was able to leave before the end of the original 12 week period.
Keith’s mobility had improved, and he started walking with quad stick. He was able to make all his meals independently using a perching stool with supervision and he was able to go out independently using his wheelchair. He also experienced increased fluency and word retrieval and regained high levels of comprehension and reading.
As he improved, Keith was able to spend weekends at home, with support staff each morning to help with his routine. As progress continued, Keith was able to go out on his own using his electric wheelchair, to shop for himself and become more independent.
Keith left Harvey Road 3 weeks early to return to his original home. Prior to discharge the Rehab team undertook suitable environmental assessments to ensure that any adaptations were made to enable him to return home.
