Maycroft

About Maycroft

Maycroft is a residential service that supports up to six individuals with Learning Disabilities, all within the warm and welcoming confines of a community-centric environment. Our commitment to fostering person-centred support is at the core of our mission. We empower the individuals under our care to actively participate in every part of their lives. Through meticulously planned interventions and dedicated mentoring, we facilitate the growth and honing of essential skills.

Our Support

At Maycroft, we are a Specialist Learning Disabilities Service, where all staff are trained to the highest standards. Our team brings a wealth of experience in working with individuals with learning disabilities. We are deeply committed to upholding the core values of our organisation, which are Excellence, Passion, Integrity, and Caring (EPIC).

Our operational framework is built upon the Active Support model, a concept that embodies the essence of transforming person-centred plans into actionable, person-centred initiatives. The Active Support Model is a strategic approach dedicated to empowering individuals with learning disabilities to actively and meaningfully engage in the daily facets of their lives. It changes the idea of “caring for” by shifting the emphasis to “working with,” promoting independence, and nurturing the individual’s capacity to actively participate in their own life journey.

Active Support is characterised by dynamic and participatory assistance. It fosters the inclusion of individuals with learning disabilities into the fabric of ordinary life, enabling them to acquire new skills, explore a broader spectrum of opportunities, and partake in activities alongside others receiving support within our service. This integration results in the growth of vital relationships and social networks that are integral to leading an everyday life

It is essential to note that a comprehensive understanding of Active Support is pivotal. Without it, there is a risk of providing inadequate or excessive assistance. It’s crucial to recognise that support should be tailored to an individual’s specific needs and abilities. In this regard, our approach at Maycroft encompasses the use of the “Hand-over-hand” technique. This technique involves a staff member gently guiding the individual by placing their hands on the individual’s hands, facilitating the execution of the activity being taught. This tactile guidance ensures a customised, effective, and empowering approach to support, facilitating the development of essential life skills.

Accommodation

Maycroft is a six-bed bungalow situated in Kings Heath, Birmingham and is equipped to provide comprehensive care and support. Notable features of Maycroft include:

Specialised Equipment: Two of the bedrooms are equipped with Tracker hoists to facilitate the safe transfer of the people we support from their beds to chairs and vice versa.

Common Areas: The facility boasts a spacious lounge with a large screen TV for communal use, along with a dining room that doubles as an activity room when needed.

Bathroom Facilities: Maycroft features a bathroom with a walk-in bath, complete with a Tracker hoist to assist individuals who may require aid in accessing the bath. Additionally, there is a wet room with a shower, and two other bathrooms equipped with toilets and sinks to cater to the diverse needs of the people we support.

Wheelchair-Accessible Kitchen: The service offers a generously sized kitchen designed to be wheelchair-accessible, promoting inclusivity in daily activities.

Additional Amenities: Maycroft includes a laundry room, as well as a sensory room designed to enhance the sensory experience for individuals we support.

Outdoor Space: The service provides a substantial outdoor area and, in the summertime, a Gazebo is set up to offer shade and an outdoor gathering space.

Office and Sleep-in Room: Maycroft includes an office space, which contributes to the administrative and operational aspects of the service. Additionally, there is a sleep-in room to ensure round-the-clock support and care for the people we support.

These features at Maycroft are tailored to enhance the quality of life and the well-being of the people we support.

Location

Maycroft is conveniently situated on the outskirts of Kings Heath, near Maypole, and is just 4.5 miles from Birmingham City Centre. The nearest train station, Yardley Wood train station, is a mere 1.5 miles away.

For convenient public transportation, the 50 bus, one of the most frequent in Birmingham, stops just 50 yards from the home. This bus route provides easy access to the city centre and the journey typically takes around 30 to 40 minutes. Additionally, the 76-bus route runs from the bottom of Kings Heath to the QE Hospital, offering further accessibility options for the people we support.

Community

At Maycroft, the people we support have a variety of community activities to enjoy. They can visit local parks, watch sports at venues like Edgbaston, Villa Park, and St Andrews, go to the cinema, shop at nearby stores, dine out at restaurants and cafes, have fun bowling, swim at leisure centres, explore zoos and safari parks, visit farms, experience nature at nature centres, get haircuts at local salons, and access healthcare facilities, including GP’s, dentists, opticians, and hospitals. These options make it easy for the individuals we support to lead an active and engaged life in the community

Good News from Maycroft

One of the individuals we support recently celebrated a significant milestone as their consultant discontinued their epilepsy medication. This decision was based on their remarkable accomplishment of remaining seizure-free for over 30 years.

In another inspiring development, a person we support has joyfully rekindled their love for swimming after an extended break from the activity. This reconnection has had a profoundly positive impact, reigniting their passion for swimming, improving their fitness, and contributing to enhanced mobility.
