A Journey of Strength and Determination: Mitch’s Rehabilitation Story
The people we support at Accomplish all face their own challenges and are encouraged by staff to live their lives to the best potential and help them with any struggles they face along the way. We explore how one of the people we support has flourished with Accomplish despite significant difficulties.
On July 2nd 2023, Mitch’s life changed dramatically when he sustained a traumatic brain injury following an accident on an electric motorbike. Prior to his injury, Mitch was known for his love of Motocross, his adventurous spirit and his thrill-seeking nature. He was also recognised for his great sense of humour, impeccable manners and caring personality.
Following the accident, Mitch spent five weeks in a coma and was initially treated at Southampton Hospital before being transferred to intensive care at Poole Hospital. Slowly, he began to regain consciousness, marking the start of a long and challenging rehabilitation journey.
In September 2023, Mitch moved to Portland Ward at Poole Hospital for the first stage of his recovery. On March 11th 2024, he was then transferred to Hobbs Rehabilitation at Laverstock Care Centre, where he continued working toward his goals. On November 11th 2024, Mitch then took another significant step forward by moving into Eilat Care Home to further develop his independence, whilst continuing to receive intense rehabilitation from the Hobbs therapists.
Mitch set ambitious goals for his rehabilitation, focusing on improving his mobility, speech and overall independence. His determination and the dedication of his support team have led to remarkable progress. Through rigorous physiotherapy, including gym workouts, mat exercises and hydrotherapy, Mitch has built up his strength and now walks longer distances with the aid of a four-wheeled walker or his hiking poles. His speech has also improved significantly, thanks to his commitment to respiratory exercises and strategies, as well as regular use of an EMST device during speech therapy sessions.
At Eilat, Mitch has embraced new challenges and also developed some essential life skills. Although he initially showed very little interest in cooking, he can now confidently prepare his own meals under supervision, with a particular fondness for sausage, bacon and egg barm cakes, as well as chicken nuggets and potato smileys. He has also discovered a new passion for recumbent cycling at Moors Valley, which he enjoys on a fortnightly basis.
Despite the rather intense rehabilitation program, Mitch hasn’t lost his adventurous streak. Much to the concern of his therapists and the Eilat staff, he spends weekends at home quad biking with his Dad and younger brother, proving that his love for speed and excitement is still very much alive!
