ABI Week – Harvey Road Success Stories
This week is Action for Brain Injury Week and the theme is “see the hidden...
Andrew* is supported to live in his own home by the team at Bective House Supported Living. Previously when enjoying trips and visits in the community, Andrew, who is autistic and has learning disabilities, needed three to one staff support. He could also not safely use public transport.
However, with the positive support of the team at Bective, Andrew enjoyed a trip to London with reduced staff support. He was joined by two members of his support team and during his visit to the capital city he enjoyed a trip on the London Eye.
A keen Arsenal supporter, Andrew particularly enjoyed being able to see the Emirates Stadium from the London Eye as well as other well-known landmarks including London Bridge and Buckingham Palace.
The trip was a huge success. Abdul Idris, Manager at Accomplish Supported Living North London, Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire, said: “Andrew really enjoyed his visit and it went extremely well. There was a great deal of careful planning and engagement with Andrew before the trip so he knew what to expect.
“Everything was carefully considered and explained in advance to help Andrew reduce his high levels of anxiety. They planned seating on the train so they were in a quiet carriage and Andrew was able to sit by the window, with his team close by.
“It was wonderful to be able to help Andrew take this trip. During COVID-19 he wasn’t able to go on many trips anywhere and he was really happy to go to London. The team were really proud; both of Andrew and that they were able to support him in having such a positive visit.”
