Ashwood Women’s Unit

Ashwood unit provides acute, specialist support for adult autistic females.  It is a centre of excellence for women living with a diagnosis of Personality Disorder or Autism who need support at a time of crisis.

Autistic females are often undiagnosed due to their ‘unusual’ and non-typical Autism presentation.  Some may have been misdiagnosed with Personality Disorder, Eating Disorder or have a co-morbid presentation.

A key goal on Ashwood is to understand patient needs, the causes of their difficulties and build a support plan that meets these identified needs.

After a multidisciplinary asssessment patients are supported to attend tailored therapeutic groups and sessions which include:

  • Independent living skills
  • Adapted dialectical behavioural therapy and cognitive behaviour therapy
  • Anger management
  • Social skills
  • Mindfulness groups
  • Sex and relationship education
  • Schema therapy focused 1:1 interventions

The ladies supported by Ashwood also receive specific support on understanding their body, develop strategies to manage their self-care and learn how to protect themselves from being vulnerable in society.  Treatment is person centred and we support patients to access outcome tools such as the Recovery and Spectrum Stars.
