Turning Goals into Achievements: Adam's Inspiring Transition to Independent Living
A gradual and positive approach to support has seen Adam* meet his goals and successfully move from a residential setting to supported living.
Adam was previously supported at The Lighthouse, an Accomplish service which supports people with a range of different care needs. Adam had been diagnosed with ADHD and is autistic. He also experienced significant anxiety.
One of the goals he set himself was to learn how to successfully and consistently self-administer his medication as he knew that was an important step in his journey towards independent living.
He had previously found it difficult to engage with the support team around him but when they helped him develop a goal-driven plan, and set about helping him achieve his goals, his trust and engagement grew.
He began by learning to order his own medication, with the support team observing him taking those. They set dates and goals for when Adam felt he would be ready, and the team felt it was safe, for him to take his medications independently.
The process went very well and Adam was very proud of his achievement. His trust and engagement with the team continued to grow and he and, together with Adam’s Mum, they began planning for him to move to a supported living environment.
During his time at The Lighthouse, Adam also developed a friendship with another person supported there, Neil. Both had experienced bereavements and supported each other and their friendship was a source of great comfort to them both.
When Adam moved, he continued to visit Neil at The Lighthouse and they continue to regularly get together for coffee. Adam has been a positive influence on Neil too; Adam applied to be an advocate for people with autism, a process supported by the team at The Lighthouse. Neil was inspired, and has asked to become a mental health advocate.
Adam continues to do well, enjoying life living in his own place but the team, and Neil, are very pleased that he remains a regular visitor at The Lighthouse.
