Annual Report 2023
Keys Group is pleased to announce the publication of its Annual Report for 2023.
A group set up during lockdown to help people share positivity in a specialist care home has gone from strength to strength since then.
The Super Star Club at Westhope Mews Supported Living in Horsham celebrates – and shares – acts of kindness and has become one of the most popular evenings of the week among the 13 people supported there.
Westhope is part of Accomplish and supports people with learning and physical disabilities in its residential and supported living service. During the periods of lockdown during COVID-19. the people supported there found it difficult that households could not mix and those living in the residential area of Westhope couldn’t mix with those living in the supported living service.
Alison Ansell, who manages the supported living service at Westhope Mews said: “We set up the club for Tuesday nights to try to raise the positivity as, understandably, people were very frustrated with the limitations lock down brought with them. They really missed hanging out with each other. So, to stay within the rules, we would meet outdoors on a Tuesday evening in our shared courtyard. This was all weather permitting and with appropriate social distancing of course!
“It started off just chatting and doing quizzes and cakes and ice-creams but ! and I recognised quickly that due to the pandemic there was a lot of negative chats and uncertainty.
“I started talking to the people we support about the importance of looking out for each other so if someone looked sad or lonely, they could do or say something kind or positive; just have a chat or offer a cuppa. Or even just sit with the person.
“This snowballed into sharing what ‘acts of kindness’ have you done this week and we also introduced an element where the person should think of something positive to say to the person sitting next to them. That might be something like ‘I love how you make jokes and make me laugh, it makes me happy’ or ‘That dress your wearing really suits you‘.”
Alison found that when the people supported at Westhope were thinking of others and finding kind things to do for each other they seemed happier and more positive about the circumstances everyone found themselves in.
The evenings soon gained another element which everyone enjoyed. A person supported at Westhope shared she had learned how to lead relaxation sessions which were then incorporated into the end of each Tuesday evening session.
Alison said: “This relaxation time was and is very successful. Everyone joins in and you can see how calm and relaxed everyone is. The night is really popular and people really enjoy sharing positivity. With the weather turning and darker nights, the evenings will now move indoors as we want to make sure they continue.”
